Australia lead the Cricket World Cup Winners List with six titles. India and West Indies have two each. Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England have won once. Australia are also the latest champions, having beaten India in the 2023 final.

The first Men’s ODI World Cup took place in 1975. This guide covers all 13 completed editions through 2023, with champions, finalists, hosts and final results.

This is the Men’s ODI competition. The Men’s T20 World Cup, Women’s World Cup and Champions Trophy have separate records. For the next tournament, see our World Cup 2027 schedule and match guide.

Historical List Last Verified: 17 October 2026. The 2027 tournament has not been completed, so it has no winner in this list.

Australia: six titles and eight final appearances. India: champions in 1983 and 2011. West Indies: winners of the first two editions. England: winners of the tied 2019 final under the boundary-count rule used at that tournament.

World Cup Winners By Edition

The first three tournaments used 60 overs per innings. The competition moved to 50 overs in 1987. Keep that change in mind when comparing early finals with modern ones.

1975: West Indies Win The First World Cup

Final: 21 June, Lord’s, London. Captain: Clive Lloyd. Player Of The Match: Clive Lloyd.

West Indies made 291/8 in 60 overs. Australia were all out for 274 in 58.4 overs. Lloyd’s 102 from 85 balls gave his side a strong total. Five Australian batters were run out during the chase. The 17-run win made West Indies the first world champions.

1979: West Indies Keep Their Crown

Final: 23 June, Lord’s, London. Captain: Clive Lloyd. Player Of The Match: Viv Richards.

West Indies scored 286/9 in 60 overs. England were dismissed for 194 in 51 overs. Richards made an unbeaten 138, then Joel Garner took 5/38. The 92-run result gave Lloyd a second title. West Indies remain the only team other than Australia to win consecutive editions.

1983: India Defend 183 At Lord’s

Final: 25 June, Lord’s, London. Captain: Kapil Dev. Player Of The Match: Mohinder Amarnath.

India were all out for 183 in 54.4 overs. West Indies fell for 140 in 52 overs. Kapil’s running catch removed Richards, a key moment in the chase. Amarnath took 3/12 and claimed the final wicket. India won by 43 runs and ended West Indies’ two-title run.

1987: Australia Win Their First Title

Final: 8 November, Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Captain: Allan Border. Player Of The Match: David Boon.

Australia made 253/5 in the first 50-over World Cup final. Boon led the batting with 75. England finished on 246/8 after their full 50 overs. A seven-run victory gave Australia their first title.

1992: Wasim Akram Changes The Final

Final: 25 March, Melbourne Cricket Ground. Captain: Imran Khan. Player Of The Match: Wasim Akram.

Pakistan made 249/6 in 50 overs. England were all out for 227 in 49.2 overs. Akram dismissed Allan Lamb and Chris Lewis with consecutive deliveries. Those wickets turned the chase towards Pakistan. Imran’s side won by 22 runs and claimed the country’s first Men’s ODI World Cup.

1996: Sri Lanka Chase Down Australia

Final: 17 March, Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Captain: Arjuna Ranatunga. Player Of The Match: Aravinda de Silva.

Australia posted 241/7 in 50 overs. Sri Lanka reached 245/3 in 46.2 overs, winning by seven wickets with 22 balls left. De Silva made an unbeaten 107. He also took 3/42 and held two catches.

1999: Shane Warne Sets Up Australia’s Win

Final: 20 June, Lord’s, London. Captain: Steve Waugh. Player Of The Match: Shane Warne.

Pakistan were dismissed for 132 in 39 overs. Warne took 4/33 to keep the target small. Australia reached 133/2 in 20.1 overs. The eight-wicket win brought their second title. It began a run of three straight World Cup victories, under two different captains.

2003: Ricky Ponting Takes Charge

Final: 23 March, New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg. Captain: Ricky Ponting. Player Of The Match: Ricky Ponting.

Australia made 359/2 in 50 overs. Ponting scored an unbeaten 140. India were all out for 234 in 39.2 overs, leaving Australia winners by 125 runs.

2007: Gilchrist Powers A Rain-Shortened Final

Final: 28 April, Kensington Oval, Bridgetown. Captain: Ricky Ponting. Player Of The Match: Adam Gilchrist.

Gilchrist hit 149 from 104 balls as Australia made 281/4 in 38 overs. Sri Lanka’s revised target was 269 from 36 overs. They finished on 215/8. Australia won by 53 runs under the Duckworth–Lewis method. Their third straight title remains unmatched in the Men’s ODI World Cup.

2011: India Win At Wankhede

Final: 2 April, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Captain: MS Dhoni. Player Of The Match: MS Dhoni.

Sri Lanka scored 274/6 in 50 overs. India reached 277/4 in 48.2 overs, winning by six wickets with ten balls left. Dhoni finished unbeaten on 91 and struck the winning six. The players then carried Sachin Tendulkar around Wankhede. India had their second title, 28 years after their first.

2015: Australia Lift The Trophy At The MCG

Final: 29 March, Melbourne Cricket Ground. Captain: Michael Clarke. Player Of The Match: James Faulkner.

New Zealand were all out for 183 in 45 overs. Mitchell Starc bowled Brendon McCullum in the opening over, while Faulkner took 3/36. Australia chased 186/3 in 33.1 overs. The seven-wicket win gave them a fifth title.

2019: England Win After Two Ties

Final: 14 July, Lord’s, London. Captain: Eoin Morgan. Player Of The Match: Ben Stokes.

New Zealand made 241/8. England were all out for 241 after 50 overs. Both sides then scored 15 in the Super Over. England won under the boundary-count rule used in that edition: 26 boundaries to New Zealand’s 17. This was England’s first title, but not a victory by runs or wickets.

2023: Travis Head Leads Australia’s Chase

Final: 19 November, Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Captain: Pat Cummins. Player Of The Match: Travis Head.

India were all out for 240 in 50 overs. Head made 137 from 120 balls as Australia reached 241/4 in 43 overs. They won by six wickets with 42 balls left and secured their sixth title. Read more about the ground in our World Cup venues and stadium records guide.

Most Successful Teams In The Men’s ODI World Cup

Australia lead with six titles and eight finals. A final appearance is not the same as a championship.

Men's ODI World Cup titles through 2023: Australia 6; India and West Indies 2 each; England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka 1 each.

India’s World Cup Wins: 1983 And 2011

India’s titles came from two different kinds of final. In 1983, Kapil Dev’s team defended a small total against the two-time defending champions. In 2011, Dhoni’s side completed a demanding chase at home.

Lord’s marked India’s first title. Wankhede marked the second. The different innings lengths and conditions matter when comparing their scores.

India’s next campaign belongs in our 2027 World Cup schedule guide, not in the winners table.
