Choose Format
India and New Zealand have met in 219 men’s international matches across Tests, ODIs and T20Is. India lead with 104 wins, while New Zealand have 79. The rivalry looks different in each format. Tests include a large number of draws. White-ball cricket has brought World Cup knockouts, high scores and close finishes. This India vs New Zealand head-to-head guide covers overall results, format-wise records, leading players, recent matches and venue splits.
Records checked through 15 October 2026. Only men’s senior Tests, ODIs and T20Is are included. Future fixtures, women’s matches and domestic cricket do not enter these totals. The two 2020 T20I Super Over wins count as India wins, not again as ties. Sources used: ESPNcricinfo, Howstat, ICC and BCCI.
India vs New Zealand Head-to-Head Record Across All Formats
India hold the overall lead, but one number cannot explain the whole rivalry. Their Test record is 22 wins to New Zealand’s 16. In ODIs, India lead 63–52. In T20Is, the result-based record is 19–11 in India’s favour.
| Statistic | Overall | Tests | ODIs | T20Is |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Total Matches | 219 | 65 | 123 | 31 |
| India Wins | 104 | 22 | 63 | 19 |

| Draws | 27 | 27 | 0 | 0 |
| Ties | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| No Results | 7 | 0 | 7 | 0 |
Every match occupies one result category in this table. The total is the sum of wins, draws, ties and no-results. It does not count the two teams’ match appearances as two separate matches.
A draw is a Test result. A tie means the scores or the applicable DLS result were level without a deciding winner. A no-result is separate from both. India’s two Super Over wins in January 2020 are explained in the T20I section below.
India vs New Zealand Head-to-Head Record In Tests
India and New Zealand have played 65 Tests. India won 22, New Zealand won 16, and 27 were drawn. There have been no tied Tests between them.
| Test Record | Figure |

| Latest Completed Test | Mumbai, 1–3 November 2024 |
| Latest Result | New Zealand won by 25 runs |
The latest series changed the story of the rivalry. New Zealand won all three Tests in India in 2024. They won by eight wickets in Bengaluru, 113 runs in Pune and 25 runs in Mumbai. That sweep is part of the current record, not a prediction for another tour.
India vs New Zealand Head-to-Head Test Records
New Zealand’s 680/8 declared at Wellington in 2014 is the highest team innings in this rivalry. Brendon McCullum made 302 in that match, the highest individual Test score between these teams.
Ajaz Patel’s 10/119 at Wankhede in December 2021 is the best innings bowling figure. It means he took all ten India wickets in that innings. A full-match bowling figure combines two innings and is a different record.
The player-leader table below separates these individual records from team totals. Rahul Dravid leads the rivalry’s Test runs, while Ravichandran Ashwin leads its wickets.
India vs New Zealand Head-to-Head Record In The WTC Final
The only neutral Test was the inaugural World Test Championship final at Southampton in June 2021. New Zealand won by eight wickets. India made 217 and 170; New Zealand made 249 and 140/2.
That result counts in the Test head-to-head. It does not count in the ODI World Cup or T20 World Cup record. These are different competitions.
India vs New Zealand Head-to-Head Record In ODIs
The teams have played 123 ODIs. India have 63 wins, New Zealand have 52, one game was tied and seven ended without a result.
| ODI Record | Figure |
|---|---|
| Total ODIs | 123 |
| India Wins | 63 |
| New Zealand Wins | 52 |
| Ties | 1 |
| No Results | 7 |
| Latest Completed ODI | Indore, 18 January 2026 |
| Latest Result | New Zealand won by 41 runs |
New Zealand won the January 2026 ODI series in India 2–1. India won the first match in Vadodara, but New Zealand won in Rajkot and Indore. Those three results are included in the 123-match total.
India vs New Zealand Head-to-Head ODI Records
| Team Record | Holder | Figure And Match |
|---|---|---|
| Highest Successful Chase | New Zealand | 348/6, chasing 348 at Hamilton on 5 February 2020 |
| Biggest Win By Runs | New Zealand | 200 runs at Dambulla on 10 August 2010 |
| Biggest Win By Wickets | New Zealand | 10 wickets at Melbourne on 10 January 1981 |
| Biggest India Win By Runs | India | 190 runs at Visakhapatnam on 29 October 2016 |
| Biggest India Win By Wickets | India | 9 wickets at Nagpur on 31 October 1987 |
New Zealand’s Hamilton chase ended at 348/6 in 48.1 overs. The target was 348, so they won by four wickets. A high second-innings total is not automatically a successful chase; the result must also be a win.
Gill’s 208 and Shami’s 7/57 lead the individual ODI records. They appear in the separate player table so that a team chase and a player’s innings are not mixed.
India vs New Zealand Head-to-Head Record In ODI World Cup
India and New Zealand have had 11 ODI World Cup meetings, including one abandoned fixture. Each team has five wins. They have not played an ODI World Cup final against each other through this cutoff.

| 22 October 2023 | Dharamsala | India won by 4 wickets |
| 15 November 2023 | Mumbai | India won the semi-final by 70 runs |
The 2019 semi-final ran into its reserve day. New Zealand made 239/8 and bowled India out for 221. In the 2023 semi-final, India made 397/4 and dismissed New Zealand for 327. These are the two ODI World Cup knockout meetings in the list.
The rain-affected Nottingham fixture in June 2019 adds one no-result, not a win or a tie. The 2025 Champions Trophy final is not an ODI World Cup match and is excluded from this World Cup table. It still belongs in the overall ODI record.
India vs New Zealand Head-to-Head Record In T20Is
India and New Zealand have played 31 T20Is. On the result basis used here, India have 19 wins, New Zealand have 11, and one match is a tie. There are no no-results in this record.

India vs New Zealand Head-to-Head: How Super Over Matches Are Counted
The Hamilton match on 29 January 2020 and the Wellington match on 31 January 2020 were level after the normal innings. India won the Super Over in each. Both games count once, as India wins, in this article.
The Napier match on 22 November 2022 was tied by the DLS method. It is the one tie in the result-based summary. A table that lists all regulation ties will show three tied finishes and fewer India wins. That is a different counting basis, not three extra matches.
India vs New Zealand Head-to-Head T20I Records
India’s highest total is 271/5, made at Thiruvananthapuram on 31 January 2026. New Zealand replied with 225, and India won by 46 runs. The match also produced Arshdeep Singh’s 5/51, the best innings bowling figure in this rivalry.
Bowling records rank the number of wickets first, then runs conceded. Arshdeep’s five-wicket spell therefore ranks above Deepak Hooda’s 4/10, even though Hooda conceded fewer runs.
Shubman Gill’s 126 not out from 63 balls at Ahmedabad in February 2023 remains the highest individual T20I score between these sides. Suryakumar Yadav leads the rivalry’s runs with 526, while Ish Sodhi leads its wickets with 30.
India vs New Zealand Head-to-Head Record In T20 World Cup
The teams have met four times in the men’s T20 World Cup. New Zealand won the first three games. India won their latest meeting, the 2026 final in Ahmedabad.

| New Zealand Wins | 3 |

| 31 October 2021 | Super 12 | Dubai | New Zealand won by 8 wickets |
| 8 March 2026 | Final | Ahmedabad | India won by 96 runs |
India made 255/5 in the 2026 final and bowled New Zealand out for 159. It was their first T20 World Cup knockout meeting. The World Cup record is a subset of the full T20I record, so these four matches are not added to the 31 again.
India vs New Zealand Head-to-Head Player Records
These are rivalry records, not each player’s whole international career. A Test leader may not lead the ODI or T20I list. Best bowling below means a single innings or spell, not combined figures across a Test.

An asterisk means not out. Gill’s 126* is an unbeaten innings; his ODI 208 is a separate innings in a different format.

India vs New Zealand Head-to-Head Record At Different Venues
