Where it began
Early life and family
Shubman Gill was born on 8 September 1999 in Fazilka, Punjab. His father, Lakhwinder Singh Gill, is an agriculturist, and his mother is Keart Gill.
Cricket became part of his life at a very young age. His father has described Gill beginning to play before he turned four. That early support mattered: the family did more than encourage his interest at home.
In April 2007, the family moved to Mohali so Gill could train in a better cricket environment. He joined the Mohali Cricket Association academy near the Punjab Cricket Association stadium. The move gave him access to organised coaching and a clearer route into competitive cricket.
His story began with that combination of talent, regular practice and family support. Long before the India jersey or IPL captaincy, his focus was on learning the game and making his way through Punjab’s cricket system.
The first big stage
The 2018 Under-19 World Cup breakthrough
Gill became widely known during India’s winning campaign at the 2018 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He was the team’s vice-captain and finished with 372 runs at an average of 124.
His century against Pakistan in the semi-final was one of the main performances of the tournament. He was named Player of the Tournament, giving his age-group career a clear highlight before he moved into senior international cricket.
The same year brought his first IPL season with Kolkata Knight Riders. The World Cup and IPL offered different challenges: one was an age-group tournament, while the other placed him alongside experienced international players. Both became important steps in his development.
From prospect to India batter
Shubman Gill’s international career
Gill made his ODI debut against New Zealand in Hamilton on 31 January 2019. His Test debut followed against Australia at Melbourne on 26 December 2020. He first played a T20 international against Sri Lanka in Mumbai on 3 January 2023.
One of his early Test highlights came during the 2020–21 tour of Australia. His 91 in India’s successful chase at the Gabba helped the team win the deciding Test and the series. It was an important innings early in his Test career.
His first ODI double hundred came on 18 January 2023, when he scored 208 against New Zealand. At the time, he became the youngest men’s ODI batter to score a double hundred.
He passed that score on 30 September 2026 with an unbeaten 223 from 133 balls against West Indies in the second ODI in Guwahati. It is his highest ODI score as of 14 October 2026. India reached 406 for two in 43.3 overs and won by eight wickets.
The franchise journey
From Kolkata Knight Riders to Gujarat Titans
Gill began his IPL career with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018 and remained with the franchise through the 2021 season. He then joined Gujarat Titans for their first IPL campaign in 2022.
Gujarat won the title in that debut season, with Gill part of their championship side. His move to the Titans became a major stage of his senior career.
In IPL 2023, he scored 890 runs, including three centuries, and won the Orange Cap as the tournament’s leading run-scorer.
On 27 November 2023, Gujarat Titans announced Gill as their captain ahead of IPL 2024. His role now included leading the side as well as batting at the top of the order. The Gujarat Titans team profile covers the franchise’s history and team context.
A new responsibility
India captaincy
Gill was appointed India’s Test captain in May 2025. In October 2025, he was also announced as the country’s ODI captain.
His ODI captaincy was confirmed again in India’s official squad announcement for the England tour in June 2026. Official coverage of the Sri Lanka Test series in August 2026 also identified him as India’s Test captain.
These appointments added a leadership chapter to a career that had first attracted attention for batting. His Gujarat Titans captaincy began in IPL 2024; his India Test and ODI leadership came later. The dates are separate parts of his story.
