The Indian Premier League (IPL) is India’s men’s franchise T20 competition. It began in 2008 with eight teams. The inaugural title went to Rajasthan Royals, who beat Chennai Super Kings in the final. The league has since produced a mix of repeat champions and one-time winners.
This record is current through the completed 2026 season. Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the 2026 final. “Present” in the title means the latest completed edition covered here, not an assumed future winner.
IPL team changes and franchise history
The IPL first expanded from eight teams to 10 in 2011 when Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India joined. Kochi lasted one season, while Pune Warriors India withdrew after 2013. Deccan Chargers, an inaugural franchise and the 2009 champion, was terminated after 2012. Sunrisers Hyderabad entered in 2013 as a separate Hyderabad franchise, so Sunrisers does not inherit Deccan Chargers’ title.
Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended for the 2016 and 2017 editions. Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant filled the two replacement places. CSK and RR returned in 2018. The league reached its present 10-team field in 2022 with Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. Historical team names are preserved in the table: Kings XI Punjab became Punjab Kings, Delhi Daredevils became Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bangalore became Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
