The highest individual score in cricket at men’s international level is Brian Lara’s 400 not out in Tests. Rohit Sharma owns the ODI record with 264, while Aaron Finch remains top in men’s T20Is with 172. This guide covers the verified top 10 innings in each format through 16 October 2026. It includes official internationals only, so IPL, Big Bash League, domestic List A and other franchise scores are not included.
Table Numbering: The No. column shows row order. Players with equal totals still share the same record; the row numbers do not break those ties.

Highest Individual Score In Cricket: Format Records At A Glance
| Format | Record Holder | Highest Score | Opposition | Venue | Match Date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Test | Brian Lara | 400* | England | Antigua Recreation Ground, St John’s | 10 April 2004 |
| ODI | Rohit Sharma | 264 | Sri Lanka | Eden Gardens, Kolkata | 13 November 2014 |
| T20I | Aaron Finch | 172 | Zimbabwe | Harare Sports Club, Harare | 3 July 2018 |
These records answer the main search question quickly, but the innings are not directly comparable. A Test batsman can occupy the crease for several sessions, an ODI innings has a 50-over limit, and a T20I innings has only 120 legal balls available to a team. An asterisk means the batter was not out when the innings ended.
What Counts As An International Record?
This article uses the official men’s Test, ODI and T20I classifications in the primary Cricinfo records tables. It does not combine formats into one score, and it does not treat a franchise appearance as an international match. That distinction matters because a huge score in the IPL, a domestic one-day match or a non-international T20 does not change a men’s international record.
The tables also include associate nations. That is particularly important in T20Is, where the international calendar has expanded sharply. Older lists often stop at full-member teams and therefore miss recent scores from Rwanda, Austria, Spain, Croatia, the Cayman Islands and Estonia. The rankings below include every official men’s T20I record listed by the source at the cutoff date.
Highest Individual Score In Test Cricket
Brian Lara’s 400 not out for West Indies against England in the Test at St John’s that began on 10 April 2004 remains the highest individual Test innings. He faced 582 balls, hit 43 fours and four sixes, and was still unbeaten when West Indies declared at 751 for 5. The match was drawn after England followed on. Lara’s score came after Matthew Hayden had briefly moved the record to 380 in 2003; it was Lara’s second world-record Test score against England in Antigua.
The latest major change near the top was Wiaan Mulder’s 367 not out for South Africa against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in July 2025. Mulder reached 300 quickly, finished on 367 from 334 balls with 49 fours and four sixes, and declared at lunch on the second day. He is fifth on the current list, not the record holder. That corrects older pages that either omit him or describe him as the holder.
Top 10 Highest Test Scores
| No. | Player | Country | Score | Opposition | Venue | Date | Balls |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Brian Lara | West Indies | 400* | England | St John’s | 10 Apr 2004 | 582 |
| 2 | Matthew Hayden | Australia | 380 | Zimbabwe | W.A.C.A., Perth | 9 Oct 2003 | 437 |
| 3 | Brian Lara | West Indies | 375 | England | St John’s | 16 Apr 1994 | 538 |
| 4 | Mahela Jayawardene | Sri Lanka | 374 | South Africa | Colombo (SSC) | 27 Jul 2006 | 572 |
| 5 | Wiaan Mulder | South Africa | 367* | Zimbabwe | Bulawayo | 6 Jul 2025 | 334 |
| 6 | Garfield Sobers | West Indies | 365* | Pakistan | Kingston | 26 Feb 1958 | — |
| 7 | Len Hutton | England | 364 | Australia | The Oval | 20 Aug 1938 | 847 |
| 8 | Sanath Jayasuriya | Sri Lanka | 340 | India | Colombo (RPS) | 2 Aug 1997 | 578 |
| 9 | Hanif Mohammad | Pakistan | 337 | West Indies | Bridgetown | 17 Jan 1958 | — |
| 10 | Wally Hammond | England | 336* | New Zealand | Auckland | 31 Mar 1933 | — |
Test dates in these tables are match start dates, not necessarily the day each batter reached the score. The order is based on runs, with no shared score in this top 10. Balls faced are shown only when the primary records table supplies them. The dash is deliberate: historic scorecards did not always preserve a reliable ball-by-ball total, so missing data has not been reconstructed.
Highest Individual Score In ODI Cricket
Rohit Sharma’s 264 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens on 13 November 2014 is still the highest ODI score. He faced 173 balls, hit 33 fours and nine sixes, and made 264 in India’s 404 for 5. India won by 153 runs. Rohit was dismissed from the last ball of the innings, so this record is not marked not out.
The current list has a significant 2026 update. Shubman Gill made an unbeaten 223 from 133 balls against West Indies in Guwahati on 30 September 2026. The innings is third overall, behind Rohit’s 264 and Martin Guptill’s 237 not out. Gill’s score is the highest in an ODI run chase and India’s second-highest ODI innings. ESPNcricinfo’s scorecard and contemporary statistics report record the innings.
Top 10 Highest ODI Scores
| No. | Player | Country | Score | Opposition | Venue | Date | Balls |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rohit Sharma | India | 264 | Sri Lanka | Eden Gardens, Kolkata | 13 Nov 2014 | 173 |
| 2 | Martin Guptill | New Zealand | 237* | West Indies | Wellington | 21 Mar 2015 | 163 |
| 3 | Shubman Gill | India | 223* | West Indies | Guwahati | 30 Sep 2026 | 133 |
| 4 | Virender Sehwag | India | 219 | West Indies | Indore | 8 Dec 2011 | 149 |
| 5 | Chris Gayle | West Indies | 215 | Zimbabwe | Canberra | 24 Feb 2015 | 147 |
| 6 | Fakhar Zaman | Pakistan | 210* | Zimbabwe | Bulawayo | 20 Jul 2018 | 156 |
| 7 | Pathum Nissanka | Sri Lanka | 210* | Afghanistan | Pallekele | 9 Feb 2024 | 139 |
| 8 | Ishan Kishan | India | 210 | Bangladesh | Chattogram | 10 Dec 2022 | 131 |
| 9 | Rohit Sharma | India | 209 | Australia | Bengaluru | 2 Nov 2013 | 158 |
| 10 | Rohit Sharma | India | 208* | Sri Lanka | Mohali | 13 Dec 2017 | 153 |
Three players share sixth place on 210. Fakhar Zaman and Pathum Nissanka were unbeaten, while Ishan Kishan was dismissed. Ties are kept as ties rather than forcing an artificial seventh-place label. This is also why the table contains ten innings even though the final rank shown is 10.
Highest Individual Score In T20 International Cricket
Aaron Finch’s 172 against Zimbabwe in Harare on 3 July 2018 remains the men’s T20I record. He faced 76 balls and hit 16 fours and 10 sixes. The most important correction to older articles is that Finch’s record has survived newer associate-nation scoring, but he is no longer followed immediately by a blank or by a domestic score.
Hamza Khan of Rwanda and Karanbir Singh of Austria both made 164 in 2026, placing joint second. Hamza’s 164 not out came against Ivory Coast in Gaborone on 24 May, while Karanbir’s 164 came against Hungary at Szodliget on 28 June. Hazratullah Zazai’s 162 not out remains fourth. Darius Visser’s 132 for Samoa, a score sometimes mentioned in record discussions, is well outside the current top 10; his famous 39-run over is a different record.
Top 10 Highest T20I Scores
| No. | Player | Country | Score | Opposition | Venue | Date | Balls |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aaron Finch | Australia | 172 | Zimbabwe | Harare | 3 Jul 2018 | 76 |
| 2 | Hamza Khan | Rwanda | 164* | Ivory Coast | Gaborone Oval 1 | 24 May 2026 | 65 |
| 3 | Karanbir Singh | Austria | 164 | Hungary | Szodliget | 28 Jun 2026 | 57 |
| 4 | Hazratullah Zazai | Afghanistan | 162* | Ireland | Dehradun | 23 Feb 2019 | 62 |
| 5 | Mohammad Ihsan | Spain | 160 | Croatia | Cartagena | 7 Dec 2025 | 63 |
| 6 | Aaron Finch | Australia | 156 | England | Southampton | 29 Aug 2013 | 63 |
| 7 | YSD Seneveratne | Cayman Islands | 150* | Brazil | Buenos Aires | 14 Dec 2024 | 67 |
| 8 | CM Carroll | Croatia | 150* | Switzerland | Episkopi | 19 May 2026 | 72 |
| 9 | Glenn Maxwell | Australia | 145* | Sri Lanka | Pallekele | 6 Sep 2016 | 65 |
| 10 | Sahil Chauhan | Estonia | 144* | Cyprus | Episkopi | 17 Jun 2024 | 41 |
The T20I table demonstrates why a complete international record search must include associates. The two 2026 164s and the 2025 Spain score are official T20Is, not club matches. A score’s place in this list is determined by runs first; strike rate can provide context, but it does not replace the innings total.
Comparing The Three Format Records
| Format | Holder | Score | Not Out? | Balls | Main Match Context |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Test | Brian Lara | 400* | Yes | 582 | West Indies declared 751/5 against England in a drawn Test |
| ODI | Rohit Sharma | 264 | No | 173 | India made 404/5 and beat Sri Lanka by 153 runs |
| T20I | Aaron Finch | 172 | No | 76 | Australia made a record-setting individual effort against Zimbabwe |
The numbers show the effect of format length. Lara’s 400 came in an innings without a fixed over limit. Rohit’s 264 combined extreme volume with a 152.60 strike rate, and Finch’s 172 came at 226.31. It is more useful to call each innings the record for its own format than to declare one performance “better” from the raw totals alone.

Who Has Scored The Highest Individual Score In T20I Cricket?
Aaron Finch remains the men’s T20I record holder with 172 against Zimbabwe in Harare on 3 July 2018. The score came from 76 balls. Rwanda’s Hamza Khan and Austria’s Karanbir Singh are joint second on 164 in the current all-nation table.
What Is The Highest Individual Score In Cricket At International Level?
Brian Lara’s 400 not out is the highest men’s international innings, and the record in Test cricket. It is also the highest score in the men’s three-format guide here. It should not be compared as a single universal record without stating the format, because Tests allow much more time than ODIs or T20Is.
Is Rohit Sharma’s 264 Still The Highest ODI Score?
Yes. As of 16 October 2026, Rohit’s 264 remains first. Martin Guptill’s 237 not out is second, and Shubman Gill’s verified 223 not out against West Indies on 30 September 2026 is third.
Is Shubman Gill’s 223 The Highest Individual ODI Score?
No. Gill’s 223 not out is the third-highest men’s ODI innings. It is, however, the highest individual score in an ODI chase and India’s second-highest ODI score. Rohit Sharma’s 264 remains the overall record.
Does The Highest Score List Include IPL Records?
No. This page is restricted to official men’s Tests, ODIs and T20Is. IPL, BBL, PSL, The Hundred, domestic List A and other franchise or domestic scores are excluded, even when the same player has an international career.
What Is The Highest Score In Women’s International Cricket?
Women’s records are separate and are not mixed into the men’s tables. By format, Kiran Baluch holds the women’s Test record with 242 for Pakistan against West Indies in 2004; Amelia Kerr holds the women’s ODI record with 232 not out for New Zealand against Ireland in 2018; and Lucia Taylor holds the women’s T20I record with 169 for Argentina against Chile in 2023. These records should be maintained on a dedicated women’s international records page.
