Harshit Rana Ruled Out: Yash Thakur Joins India for Afghanistan T20Is and Asian Games

Harshit Rana Ruled Out, Yash Thakur Called Up

Harshit Rana has been ruled out of India’s three-match T20I series against Afghanistan and the men’s cricket tournament at the 2026 Asian Games, with Vidarbha fast bowler Yash Thakur named as his replacement for both assignments.

The BCCI confirmed the double squad change on September 10, three days before the opening T20I in New Delhi. Harshit had been making progress during rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, but suffered a rectus femoris strain while bowling during a match simulation on September 7. No recovery timetable was included in the official update.

For India, the change removes one pace option from a tightly packed international schedule. For Yash, it creates an immediate opportunity to move from a recent T20I debut into a home series against Afghanistan and then India’s Asian Games gold-medal defence in Japan.

Save this update: India face Afghanistan on September 13, 15 and 17 before the men’s Asian Games cricket event begins on September 24.

The distinction between the confirmed information and speculation is important. The BCCI has said Harshit is unavailable for these two assignments, but it has not announced when he will return. It would therefore be premature to attach a recovery date or rule him out of any later series.

Harshit had originally been selected subject to fitness clearance. The latest advisory closes that uncertainty for the Afghanistan series and Asian Games: Yash now takes his place in both 15-player squads.

Why Yash Thakur Has Been Called Up

Yash is a 27-year-old right-arm fast bowler from Vidarbha. He made his India T20I debut on the July 2026 tour of Zimbabwe and collected four wickets from two matches, according to the BCCI.

His domestic T20 record gives the selectors a larger sample to assess. The BCCI lists Yash with 81 wickets in 50 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches at an economy rate of 7.04.1 Those numbers point to a bowler with sustained experience in India’s leading domestic T20 competition rather than an emergency selection based on one performance.

Yash is a specialist seam replacement, which helps India preserve the broad structure of the squad. He can support a pace group that also includes Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, while Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shivam Dube offer additional seam-bowling options depending on the final combination.

His precise role is not confirmed. India may use him with the new ball, through the middle overs or at the death, but that decision will depend on the pitch, opposition match-ups and the fitness of the other quicks. A squad call-up does not guarantee a place in the playing XI.

Updated India Squad for the Afghanistan T20Is

The three T20Is will be played at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on September 13, 15 and 17. Afghanistan are the official hosts despite the series taking place in India.2

BattersAbhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
All-round optionsShivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar
SpinnersVarun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi
Fast bowlersJasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Yash Thakur

Full updated squad: Shreyas Iyer (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Tilak Varma (vice-captain), Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Yash Thakur.

The most immediate selection question is whether India use Yash in the first T20I or retain a pace combination led by Bumrah and Arshdeep. Team balance may also depend on how many specialist spinners India want at a venue where shorter boundaries can reward aggressive batting but slower bowling can still become effective.

Updated India Men’s Squad for Asian Games 2026

Yash also replaces Harshit in the Asian Games squad. India are defending the men’s cricket gold medal and have been seeded directly into the quarter-finals.3

India will face the Group A runners-up in their September 28 quarter-final. Group A contains Afghanistan, Japan and Nepal, so the final opponent will only be known after the group stage.3

The short knockout route creates a different challenge from a bilateral series. India cannot recover from an off day in a quarter-final or semi-final, which increases the value of a bowler who can deliver under pressure. Yash’s domestic T20 experience gives India another pace option as they prepare for matches at Korogi Athletic Park in Aichi Prefecture.

What Harshit Rana’s Absence Changes for India

Harshit’s withdrawal reduces competition among India’s specialist fast bowlers. The selectors had initially named him alongside Bumrah and Arshdeep, giving the squad three distinct pace options before considering the seam-bowling all-rounders.

Yash restores the numerical balance, but the two bowlers are not identical. India will have to decide how to use Yash’s strengths without assuming he must perform Harshit’s exact role. The Afghanistan series provides the coaching staff with three matches at the same venue to assess combinations before the Asian Games knockout stage.

The timing may work in Yash’s favour. If selected against Afghanistan, he can gain international rhythm immediately before travelling to Japan. It can also help India decide whether to use two frontline quicks and additional all-round support, or play a three-seamer structure around Bumrah, Arshdeep and Yash.

Why the Afghanistan Series Matters More Now

The bilateral series already carried importance as India’s final competitive T20 preparation before the Asian Games. The replacement gives it another clear storyline: can Yash turn a late opportunity into a role in India’s medal campaign?

Afghanistan’s batting group includes Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Azmatullah Omarzai and experienced all-rounders, while their bowling attack is built around Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Noor Ahmad. India’s pace bowlers will be responsible for disrupting the powerplay before Afghanistan’s spin attack attempts to control the middle overs.

Yash does not need to reproduce someone else’s style to justify the selection. The best outcome for India would be a bowler who executes his own lengths, adapts quickly to Delhi and gives Shreyas Iyer a reliable option in high-pressure overs.

What Happens Next

India’s first T20I against Afghanistan is scheduled for September 13 at Arun Jaitley Stadium. The final playing XI and Yash’s involvement will only be confirmed at the toss. The remaining matches follow on September 15 and 17 before attention moves to the Asian Games.1

Harshit will continue his recovery process after the fresh setback. Because the BCCI has not announced a return date, all later availability questions remain open.

For Yash, the opportunity is immediate and substantial: a bilateral series, a possible Asian Games debut and the chance to strengthen India’s fast-bowling depth in the space of a few weeks.
