India’s last T20I in Wellington needs a clear distinction between a completed match and a washout. Before the NZ vs IND 2026 series, the last completed game was on 31 January 2020. India and New Zealand both scored 165. India then won the Super Over.

The teams had a later fixture in Wellington on 18 November 2022. Rain washed it out before the toss. Not a single ball was bowled. So January 2020 is the answer if you mean the last match India actually played there.

India’s Last T20I In Wellington: The Short Answer

The 2020 game was the fourth T20I of a five-match series. India had already taken a 3–0 lead. New Zealand chose to bowl first at Wellington Regional Stadium.

Virat Kohli led India. Kane Williamson missed the match with a shoulder injury. Tim Southee took charge of New Zealand. Rohit Sharma was rested.

Manish Pandey Helped India Reach 165

Manish Pandey provided middle-order support for India. He stayed unbeaten on 50 from 36 balls.

KL Rahul made 39 from 26 balls at the top. Shardul Thakur added 20 from 15 balls. Those runs helped India finish on 165/8.

Ish Sodhi took 3/26 from four overs for New Zealand.

New Zealand Needed Just Seven From The Final Over

Colin Munro scored 64 from 47 balls. Tim Seifert made 57 from 39. Ross Taylor added 24 from 18.

New Zealand reached the last over on 159/3. They needed seven runs to win with seven wickets left. Thakur bowled the final over.

Four Wickets Turned The Game Into A Tie

Taylor was caught at long-on. Daryl Mitchell then hit a four, but New Zealand could not finish the chase.

Seifert was run out while trying to take a bye. Mitchell was also caught. On the final ball, Mitchell Santner was run out while trying to complete a second run.

Four wickets fell in the over. Two were Thakur’s bowling wickets and two were run-outs. New Zealand finished on 165/7. The scores were level.

Thakur ended with 2/33. Jasprit Bumrah took 1/20, while Yuzvendra Chahal returned 1/38.

Rahul And Kohli Finished The Super Over Chase

Bumrah bowled to New Zealand in the Super Over. Seifert and Munro helped the hosts reach 13/1. India needed 14 to win.

Rahul faced Southee and hit a six from the first ball. He followed it with a four. Ten runs had come from two balls, but Rahul was caught on the third.

Kohli then took two runs and hit a four. India finished on 16/1 and won the Super Over. The result took their series lead to 4–0.

India had recovered from New Zealand’s strong position. They tied the match and then won the extra-over contest.

Why The 2022 Wellington Match Does Not Change The Answer

The next scheduled India–New Zealand T20I in Wellington was on 18 November 2022. It was the opener of a three-match series.

Hardik Pandya was India’s captain for that scheduled Wellington opener. Rohit Sharma, Kohli and Rahul were rested. Steady rain stopped the match from starting.

There was no toss, no innings and no player score. The match was abandoned without a ball being bowled. It should not be described as an India loss or another Super Over match.

In short, the latest scheduled Wellington fixture before the 2026 series was the 2022 washout. India’s last completed T20I in Wellington was the 2020 Super Over win.

Wellington Returns To The NZ vs IND 2026 Series

The 2026 tour schedule lists the third T20I in Wellington on 27 October. New Zealand Cricket lists the venue as Hnry Stadium.

Westpac Stadium, Sky Stadium and Hnry Stadium refer to the same Wellington ground under different naming deals. They are not three different venues.

The 2020 result is historical context. It does not decide the outcome of the 2026 match.
