History of Afghanistan Premier League T20
Afghanistan Premier League T20 was first launched in 2018 with five teams competing for the trophy. These five teams were named after the five regions of Afghanistan. However, not a single match was played in Afghanistan for obvious security reasons. The tournament was played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Afghanistan Premier League T20 2018 was scheduled between 5 and 21 October 2018.
The five teams were Balkh Legends, Kabul Zwanan, Kandahar Knights, Nangarhar Leopards, and Paktia Panthers. Top Players who were known for their T20 careers included Chris Gayle, Shahid Afridi, Brendon McCullum, and Andre Russell, who joined the league. This season witnessed the face of Afghanistan cricket, Mohammad Nabi, going against the likes of young Rashid Khan. Nabi’s fellow player Asghar Afghan and Pakistani Legend Shahid Afridi.
Balkh Legends (Captained by Mohammad Nabi) defeated Kabul Zwanan (Captained by Rashid Khan) by 4 wickets in the final to lift the maiden trophy.

A major update regarding the Afghanistan Premier League T20 2026 has been revealed. The league has announced the names of its three inaugural franchises. Additionally, the tournament trophy has been unveiled. The new season of the APL T20 is set to begin on December 27, 2026.
APL T20 2026 Teams
Three teams have been announced so far: Axcel United Kabul, Balkh Zwanan, and Kandahar Warriors. These teams were announced during a ceremony in Dubai. Franchise owners, league partners, and officials from the Afghanistan Cricket Board were present at the event. The selection process for the remaining franchises is currently underway.

The APL T20 2026 trophy has been named ‘Koh-E-Zafar‘. The trophy’s design is inspired by the mountains of Afghanistan. It aims to symbolise strength, courage, and success in cricket. This trophy will be awarded to the APL T20 champion.
When Will the Player Draft Take Place?
The player registration portal for APL T20 2026 will open on August 30. Following this, players will enter the draft. The player draft is scheduled for September 27, 2026. The complete tournament schedule and venues have not yet been announced. These details will be revealed later. However, it is expected that APL T20 2026 will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
