Where it began
Early life and cricket roots
Abhishek Sharma was born on 4 September 2000 in Amritsar, Punjab. He came through Punjab’s age-group system and developed as a player who could change a game with the bat while offering left-arm spin.
His early record showed why selectors noticed him. ESPNcricinfo records 1,200 runs in seven matches in the 2015–16 Vijay Merchant Under-16 competition. The next season, he captained India to the Under-19 Asia Cup title.
He was part of India’s 2018 Under-19 World Cup-winning squad. In the quarter-final against Bangladesh, he scored 50 and took two wickets for 11 runs. Those performances gave him a route into senior cricket before he had turned 18.

Domestic breakthrough
Abhishek Sharma started in the middle order before moving into the top three for Punjab. His first-class debut came in the Ranji Trophy in 2017, when he made 94 from No. 8. In December 2022, he scored his first first-class hundred against Chandigarh.
The biggest domestic step came in the 2023–24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He made 485 runs, including two hundreds and three fifties, as Punjab won the competition for the first time. His 112 from 51 balls against Andhra Pradesh powered Punjab to 275 for six, then a tournament record.
From prospect to India opener
Abhishek Sharma’s international career
Abhishek Sharma made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in Harare on 6 July 2024. His first international hundred came in the second match of that series, when he struck 100 from 46 balls on 7 July.
His most prominent early India innings came against England in Mumbai on 2 February 2025. He hit 135 from 54 balls, India’s highest individual men’s T20I score at the time, in a 150-run win. The innings included a 37-ball hundred and showed the full range of his power game.
He is not only a batter. His slow left-arm orthodox bowling gives India another option, especially when match-ups favour spin. The balance is useful, but his place has been built mainly on opening aggression and the ability to take a game away inside the powerplay.
The franchise journey
Delhi debut, then Sunrisers Hyderabad
Delhi Daredevils signed Abhishek Sharma as a 17-year-old in the 2018 auction. He made his IPL debut against Royal Challengers Bangalore and scored 46 from 19 balls. He moved to Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2019 and later settled into the opening role.
His 2022 season was the turning point: 426 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 133.12. In IPL 2024, he struck 63 from 23 balls in Sunrisers’ record 277 for three against Mumbai Indians, the highest total in IPL history at that point.
On 12 April 2025, he made 141 from 55 balls against Punjab Kings. It was his maiden IPL hundred and the highest IPL score by an Indian batter at the time. In IPL 2026, he made an unbeaten 135 from 68 balls against Delhi Capitals, his second-highest IPL score. Sunrisers named him vice-captain for the 2026 season while Ishan Kishan served as interim captain.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s team history is available in the Sunrisers Hyderabad team profile.
