Where it began
Early life and family
Jasprit Bumrah was born in Ahmedabad on 6 December 1993. He lost his father when he was five, and his mother, Daljit, worked as a teacher at Nirman High School, where he played cricket.
His unusual action was visible early. Bumrah generated pace from a very short run-up and learned to make the yorker a reliable skill. That combination helped him move through Gujarat’s age-group system without fitting the usual fast-bowling mould.
From Gujarat to the big stage
Domestic breakthrough and Mumbai Indians
Bumrah made his Gujarat Under-19 debut in December 2011. In 2013, his T20 performance against Mumbai brought him to the attention of Mumbai Indians coach John Wright.
He made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians on 4 April 2013 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. A three-wicket spell announced the skill that later became his trademark: calm execution at the end of an innings. He has stayed with Mumbai throughout his IPL career.
From debut to leader
Jasprit Bumrah’s international career
Bumrah made his ODI debut against Australia in Sydney on 23 January 2016 and his T20I debut in Adelaide three days later. He took three wickets in that first T20I. His Test debut came against South Africa at Newlands on 5 January 2018.
Test cricket changed the way his career was viewed. He took five-wicket hauls in South Africa, England, Australia and the West Indies, becoming the first Asian bowler to do so. In the 2018–19 Australia series, he led India’s wicket-taking and helped India win its first Test series there.
In 2022, Bumrah captained India in the rescheduled fifth Test against England. That match also produced the famous 35-run over: 29 runs off the bat and six extras in Stuart Broad’s over, a Test record for runs in one over.
His biggest team honour arrived at the 2024 T20 World Cup. India won the final against South Africa, and Bumrah was named Player of the Tournament. His India career continued into 2026.
The franchise journey
A Mumbai Indians career built on pressure
Mumbai Indians won the IPL in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 with Bumrah in the squad. He took 2 for 14 in the 2019 final against Chennai Super Kings. In 2020, he took 27 wickets as Mumbai retained the title.
A back injury ruled him out of IPL 2023. He returned in 2024 and took 20 wickets. Mumbai Indians’ official profile says he took 18 wickets in 12 matches in IPL 2025 and became the franchise’s leading wicket-taker in IPL history during that season.
