KL Rahul Biography: Age, Career, IPL Journey and Playing Style

KL Rahul is an Indian right-handed wicketkeeper-batter from Bengaluru, Karnataka. Born on 18 April 1992, he is 34 years old on 15 October 2026. He has played for India in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, and is retained by Delhi Capitals for IPL 2026.

Early cricket and domestic pathway

Rahul was selected in India’s squad for the 2010 Under-19 World Cup and made his senior first-class debut for Karnataka in November 2010. He also represented Jain University Bengaluru in the Red Bull Campus Cricket competition in 2011 and 2012.

His major domestic breakthrough came in Karnataka’s 2013–14 Ranji Trophy-winning season. Rahul scored more than 1,000 runs and produced a Player-of-the-Match performance in the final. Strong domestic form, followed by two hundreds in the 2014–15 Duleep Trophy final, moved him into India’s Test plans.

India career and major milestones

Rahul made his Test debut against Australia in Melbourne in December 2014. He scored a century in only his second Test, in Sydney, and added more early overseas hundreds in Sri Lanka and the West Indies. His 199 against England in Chennai in 2016 remains one of the defining innings of his early Test career.

His limited-overs breakthrough came in Zimbabwe in June 2016. Rahul scored an unbeaten 100 on ODI debut, becoming the first Indian batter to make a century in his first ODI. He then struck a T20I hundred against West Indies later that year, giving him centuries in all three international formats.

Rahul was a key member of India’s 2019 World Cup campaign and a still more influential figure at the 2023 World Cup. He scored an unbeaten 97 against Australia after India were reduced to 3 for 2 in the opening match, finished as the tournament’s leading No. 5 run-scorer and kept wicket. India reached the final.

He also contributed to India’s 2025 Champions Trophy win, batting in the middle order and finishing unbeaten in the semi-final and final. In Test cricket, he remained flexible: he opened during India’s 2024–25 Australia tour and scored 84 in Brisbane, then made 137 at Headingley on the 2025 England tour. His profile records a return to India’s Test side in 2026, including an 82 and 35 in the first Sri Lanka Test in August.

IPL journey

Rahul’s IPL career began with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2013. He moved to Sunrisers Hyderabad for 2014 and 2015, returned to RCB in 2016, and missed the 2017 season with injury.

Punjab Kings, then known as Kings XI Punjab, bought him for IPL 2018. He became captain in 2020 and won the Orange Cap after scoring 670 runs. His run of high-volume seasons also included 626 in 2021 and 616 in 2022.

Lucknow Super Giants signed Rahul for ₹17 crore before the 2022 season and appointed him captain. LSG reached the playoffs in its first two seasons; Rahul missed much of 2023 after an injury but returned to lead the side in 2024.

Delhi Capitals bought Rahul for ₹14 crore at the IPL 2025 auction. He made 539 runs in 13 innings that season, including an unbeaten 112. The official IPL retention announcement and Delhi Capitals’ own release both list him among DC’s retained players for IPL 2026.

Playing style

Rahul is a tall, technically polished right-hand batter who can open or move into the middle order. His domestic and Test record shows a sound defensive base, while his IPL seasons show that he can build an innings and accelerate when the situation demands it.

Wicketkeeping adds value to his selection. He has often taken the gloves when India or a franchise needed a flexible batter-keeper, including India’s 2023 World Cup campaign. That combination lets a team alter its batting order without replacing a specialist keeper.

His best limited-overs work is built on timing, placement and range rather than one fixed position. In IPL 2025, his 149.72 strike rate for Delhi Capitals was a clear increase on several preceding seasons, reflecting a more attacking approach while preserving his ability to bat long innings.
