Rajasthan Royals: franchise history
Rajasthan Royals entered the Indian Premier League in 2008, the competition’s inaugural season, as one of its original franchises. The team immediately created the defining chapter of its history: led by Shane Warne, Rajasthan topped the first-season league phase and defeated Chennai Super Kings by three wickets in the final to become the first IPL champions. That achievement remains the franchise’s only IPL title. The official Royals account describes the 2008 victory as the first trophy in the league and presents the club as a franchise built around discovering and developing emerging talent.
The early title was followed by uneven league results. Rajasthan missed the playoffs in each of the next three seasons, then returned to the knockout stage in 2013. That campaign ended in the second qualifier against Mumbai Indians. The Royals also reached the playoffs in 2015 and 2018, but exited in the eliminator on both occasions. These seasons established a recurring pattern in the club’s IPL record: periodic playoff runs separated by seasons outside the top four.
Rajasthan’s most significant later milestone came in 2022. Under captain Sanju Samson, the team finished second in the league phase, beat Royal Challengers Bangalore in Qualifier 2, and reached its first final since 2008. In the championship match, Gujarat Titans defeated Rajasthan by seven wickets, leaving the Royals runners-up. Reuters independently identifies Rajasthan as the inaugural champions and records Gujarat’s seven-wicket final victory.
The official team history records further playoff appearances in 2024 and 2026, while the 2025 season ended without qualification. Taken together, the record through the 2026 season is one championship (2008), one further final (2022), and multiple later playoff qualifications. Rajasthan is associated with Jaipur and Rajasthan, although its official account notes that it has had multiple home grounds; a single permanent venue is therefore not used here. No reliable source located for this research documents a former official team name: the franchise is consistently identified as Rajasthan Royals in the official IPL directory, the club’s own materials, and independent cricket coverage.
