The 10 IPL franchises are owned or operated through companies, business groups and, in some cases, acquisition consortia rather than by one individual alone. This guide to IPL team owners 2026 identifies each legal operating entity, the publicly documented ownership group and the latest ownership-change status. Proposed, approved and completed transactions are separated so a deal is not mistaken for a closed sale.

Who Owns Each IPL Team? Franchise-Wise Details
Chennai Super Kings Owner
Chennai Super Kings is operated by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited (CSKCL), which officially says it owns and operates the Chennai IPL franchise. The franchise rights moved from India Cements into CSKCL in 2014–15, and India Cements approved transferring its entire CSKCL shareholding to the India Cements Shareholders Trust.
Current public records associate control with the N. Srinivasan-led promoter/family group. The FY2024–25 board listing names N. Srinivasan as chairman, Rupa Gurunath as whole-time director and K.S. Viswanathan as MD/CEO. The reviewed filings do not publish a current CSKCL ownership percentage. India Cements’ separate transaction with UltraTech is not evidence of an UltraTech CSK acquisition.
Mumbai Indians Owner
Mumbai Indians is legally owned and promoted by Indiawin Sports Private Limited (ISPL). Its audited FY2023–24 accounts identify the Mumbai Indians IPL and WPL franchises as businesses owned and operated by ISPL, and list Reliance Industries Limited as ISPL’s holding company and promoter with 100% of paid-up equity at 31 March 2024.
RIL officially describes Nita M. Ambani as MI’s co-owner, but no personal percentage is disclosed. MI was established in 2008. A separate RIL subsidiary transaction gave Reliance Strategic Business Ventures 49% of Oval Invincibles, renamed MI London from 2026, with Surrey holding 51%; those percentages do not describe the Mumbai Indians IPL team.
Kolkata Knight Riders Owner
Kolkata Knight Riders is operated by Knight Riders Sports Private Limited, part of the wider Knight Riders Group. The latest disclosed ownership structure is Red Chillies Entertainment 55% and the Mehta Group 45%. The public figures associated with those groups are Shah Rukh Khan, and Jay Mehta and Juhi Chawla.
KKR entered the inaugural IPL in 2008. Reports in 2026 described discussions about an Ares Management minority investment and a possible Mehta Group partial sale, but the reviewed reporting said no final call had been taken. The 55%/45% split is therefore the latest disclosed structure, not proof that a later transaction closed. Knight Riders’ investments in other T20 franchises do not change this IPL cap-table conclusion.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru Owner
Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s franchise company is Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited (RCSPL), which owns and operates the IPL and WPL teams. Before the 2026 transaction, United Spirits, a Diageo subsidiary, held 100% of RCSPL. In March 2026, United Spirits agreed to sell the company for ₹16,660 crore to a consortium comprising Aditya Birla Group, The Times of India Group/Times Internet, Bolt Ventures and Blackstone BXPE.
CCI approval was reported on 30 June 2026, and Aditya Birla Group was described as the intended operating lead through Big Banyan Holdings. However, the accessible evidence did not include a definitive closing or BCCI ratification notice by 16 October 2026, so this is an agreed/acquiring ownership position, not an unqualified completed sale.
Rajasthan Royals Owner
Rajasthan Royals is operated by Royal Multisport Private Limited (RMPL) under Mauritius-based EM Sporting Holdings Limited, which also holds the Paarl Royals and Barbados Royals businesses. The franchise has been in the IPL since 2008 and won the inaugural title. In May 2026, Lakshmi Mittal’s family and Adar Poonawalla agreed to acquire the Royals group, with announced stakes of about 75% for the Mittal family, 18% for Poonawalla and 7% for existing investors including Manoj Badale.
The Competition Commission of India approved the proposed acquisition on 17 September 2026. The reviewed sources did not confirm legal closing, a post-closing register or BCCI/IPL Governing Council completion by 16 October, The deal is therefore approved, but final closing was not confirmed in those sources.
Gujarat Titans Owner
Gujarat Titans is operated by Torrent Gujarat Titans Private Limited, formerly Irelia Sports India Private Limited. Torrent Group, through Torrent Investments Private Limited, holds the disclosed 67% majority stake, while Irelia Company Pte Ltd, backed by funds managed or advised by CVC Capital Partners, retains 33%.
Torrent announced the deal on 12 February 2025 subject to conditions and approvals, including BCCI approval. Economic Times/PTI reported on 17 March 2025 that Torrent completed the acquisition after all necessary approvals. CVC had won the right to own and operate the Ahmedabad franchise in the 2021 tender, and the team was founded in 2022. The company-level percentages do not identify an individual promoter’s personal stake.
Sunrisers Hyderabad Owner
Sun TV Network Limited is the documented IPL franchise licensee and operator for Sunrisers Hyderabad. BCCI awarded Sun TV the Hyderabad franchise in 2012 at ₹85.05 crore per year after the Deccan Chargers franchise was terminated; this was a new franchise award, not a documented purchase of Deccan Chargers’ corporate shares.
Sun TV’s FY2025–26 annual return identifies Kalanithi Maran as its sole promoter, with 75% of Sun TV shares. That is corporate shareholding, not a separately disclosed SRH equity percentage. Kaviya Maran is listed as an executive director, but no personal SRH stake is disclosed. A reported SRH demerger remained a rumour, and no completed sale was verified.
Delhi Capitals Owner
Delhi Capitals is owned through JSW GMR Cricket Private Limited (JGCPL), the company identified in the franchise’s official terms as owner of the professional Twenty20 team. JSW Sports describes JGCPL as a 50:50 joint venture between JSW Sports and GMR Sports, while GMR separately confirms a 50% Delhi Capitals stake.
Publicly named principals include Parth Jindal, identified as chairman and co-owner, and Kiran Kumar Grandhi, identified as team co-owner. The franchise began as Delhi Daredevils in 2008 and adopted the Delhi Capitals identity in December 2018/2019. The same joint venture won Delhi’s WPL rights for ₹810 crore in 2023; that WPL award does not alter the IPL ownership split.
Punjab Kings Owner
Punjab Kings is operated through K.P.H. Dream Cricket Private Limited, a Chandigarh company identified on the franchise’s corporate page and 2026 AGM notice. Publicly documented principal promoters are Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta and Karan Paul. The latest clearly located percentage disclosure reports Burman 48%, Zinta 23%, Wadia 23% and Paul 6%.
Those figures are the latest disclosed split, not a newly verified 16 October 2026 cap table. No completed Punjab Kings ownership transfer was found. The September 2026 CCI approval concerned Rajasthan Royals, Paarl Royals and Barbados Royals, not PBKS. KPH’s acquisition of St Lucia Zouks in 2020 was a separate sports investment.
Lucknow Super Giants Owner
Lucknow Super Giants is owned by the RP Sanjiv Goenka (RPSG) Group. Its operating company, RPSG Sports Private Limited, holds the right to own and operate LSG. RPSG Ventures Limited discloses a 51% stake in that company, while the remaining 49% is held by an unlisted group company identified as Rainbow Investments Ltd.
Official LSG and RPSG pages identify Dr Sanjiv Goenka as principal owner, but do not publish his personal equity percentage. RPSG won the Lucknow franchise in the BCCI’s 2021 auction for ₹7,090 crore. A reported 15–20% sale was denied by RPSG Ventures on 7 October 2026; no agreed or completed transfer was verified.
Who Are The Richest IPL Team Owners?
There is no responsible single “richest IPL owner” ranking from the verified evidence used here. Personal wealth, company value and franchise value are different measurements: a promoter’s personal net worth is not the same as the market value of a parent company, and neither is automatically the value of an IPL franchise. The reviewed ownership records do not provide a consistent, dated set of personal net-worth estimates, so this guide does not rank owners by wealth.
The safer comparison is structural. Reliance Industries is the disclosed parent of Indiawin Sports; United Spirits/Diageo was the pre-sale parent of RCSPL; Torrent and CVC have disclosed Gujarat Titans company stakes; and the RCB and Rajasthan Royals transactions disclose deal values or proposed percentages without proving every individual’s personal wealth. A franchise transaction value can also be an enterprise value, not a cheque paid by one person. Readers should not turn a company stake, acquisition price or reported promoter shareholding into an unsourced personal ranking.

Recent IPL Team Ownership Changes
| Franchise | Change | Announcement / Approval Date | Status As Of 16 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Royal Challengers Bengaluru | United Spirits agreed to sell 100% of RCSPL to Aditya Birla Group, Times Group, Bolt Ventures and Blackstone for ₹16,660 crore. | 24 March 2026; CCI approval reported 30 June 2026. | Not confirmed as fully closed in the reviewed primary evidence; BCCI ratification and closing remained separate steps. |
| Rajasthan Royals | Mittal family and Poonawalla-led acquisition of the Royals group, with announced stakes of about 75%/18% and 7% existing investors. | 3 May 2026; CCI approval 17 September 2026. | Approved proposed acquisition, not definitively closed in the reviewed sources; do not state new owners as completed without a closing notice. |
| Gujarat Titans | Torrent Group acquired a 67% majority stake; CVC-backed Irelia retained 33%. | 12 February 2025 agreement; completion reported 17 March 2025. | Completed ownership evidence supports 67% Torrent / 33% CVC. |
The key distinction is between an announcement, regulatory approval and legal closing. This guide labels those stages separately because an approval alone does not prove that shares have transferred or that league and governing-body formalities are complete.
How Are IPL Teams Owned?
An IPL “owner” can mean three different things. First is the legal operating company, such as Indiawin Sports, CSKCL or RCSPL, named in a franchise’s terms, accounts or corporate filings. Second is the parent company or ownership group, such as Reliance Industries, RPSG Group, JSW-GMR or a consortium. Third is a public-facing principal, such as Nita Ambani, Shah Rukh Khan, Sanjiv Goenka or Parth Jindal. These descriptions can all be accurate without giving the individual a separately disclosed percentage.
Company-level ownership is usually the most precise answer. For example, ISPL’s accounts disclose RIL’s 100% paid-up-equity holding, JGCPL is described as a 50:50 JSW-GMR joint venture, and RPSG Ventures discloses 51% of the LSG operating company with 49% in an unlisted group company. By contrast, the public evidence for CSK and SRH identifies control through leadership or parent-company shareholding without a current franchise-company percentage.
Ownership can also change in stages. A bid or agreement may be followed by competition approval, BCCI approval, completion and later corporate filings. RCB and Rajasthan Royals are the clearest 2026 examples in this guide: their announced or approved transactions must not be presented as completed ownership until the evidence says so.

Is The IPL Team Owner The Same As The Operating Company?
Not always. The operating company is the legal entity that owns, holds rights to or runs the franchise. A parent company, consortium or public-facing promoter may sit above it. For example, RIL is above Indiawin Sports, while a consortium was acquiring RCSPL. Always check whether a source is describing the legal operator, corporate owner or individual representative.
