Where it began
Early life and cricket roots
Ishan Kishan was born in Patna, Bihar, on 18 July 1998. He developed through Jharkhand cricket and made his first-class debut for the state at 16 in December 2014.
His early record showed a batter willing to take the game on. In his first ten first-class matches, he made a hundred and five fifties. A 273 in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy against Delhi became a major domestic marker, followed by 136 against Saurashtra in the next match.
He also captained India at the 2016 Under-19 World Cup, where India finished runners-up. That campaign came before his senior breakthrough, but it placed him in a national age-group leadership role while he was still a teenager.
The domestic step up
From Jharkhand to the IPL
Ishan Kishan entered the IPL with Gujarat Lions in 2016 and played two seasons for the franchise. He moved to Mumbai Indians in 2018, where his aggressive opening and wicketkeeping gave him a larger role.
The 2020 season was his first major IPL statement. He scored 516 runs at a strike rate of 145.76, including a memorable 99. Mumbai retained him for the following season, and he was part of the side that won the 2019 and 2020 titles.
India career
White-ball impact and a record ODI innings
Ishan Kishan made his T20I debut against England in Ahmedabad on 14 March 2021. He scored 56 from 32 balls and was named Player of the Match. His ODI debut came against Sri Lanka in Colombo on 18 July 2021.
His best-known early international innings arrived in December 2022. Against Bangladesh in Chattogram, he made 210 from 131 balls. It was his maiden ODI hundred and the fastest double hundred in men’s ODI cricket at that point, reached in 126 balls.
He has also played Test cricket. His debut came against West Indies at Roseau in July 2023, and his two-Test run remains a separate part of his record from his white-ball career.
The franchise journey
Mumbai success, then Sunrisers Hyderabad
Ishan Kishan played for Mumbai Indians through the 2024 season and won two IPL titles with the team. He crossed 400 runs in three Mumbai seasons, including 516 in 2020.
Sunrisers Hyderabad selected him at the 2025 mega auction. The move began a new IPL chapter after his long Mumbai spell. As of the cutoff, SRH is his latest listed IPL team. The Sunrisers Hyderabad team profile provides the franchise context.
