Where it began
Early life and cricketing roots
Bhuvneshwar Kumar was born on 5 February 1990 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. He came through the Uttar Pradesh cricket system, where a bowler’s value was built through repeatable line, movement and patience rather than raw speed.
That became the shape of his senior career. He is a right-arm medium bowler, but the label does not explain his best work. His ability to move the ball both ways, especially with the new ball, made him difficult to line up when conditions offered even a little assistance.
The first big signal
A domestic breakthrough against a legend
His first-class debut for Uttar Pradesh came against Bengal in December 2007. In the 2008–09 Ranji Trophy final, still a teenager, he dismissed Sachin Tendulkar for a duck. It was a striking result, but the larger point was control: he could hold his shape and challenge an established batter.
Bhuvneshwar also showed useful batting ability in domestic cricket. He made 128 at No. 8 in the 2012–13 Duleep Trophy semi-final. That performance came shortly before his international arrival and underlined his value as more than a specialist with the ball.
From debut to white-ball specialist
Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s India career
Bhuvneshwar made his T20I debut against Pakistan in Bengaluru on 25 December 2012. He made his ODI debut against Pakistan in Chennai five days later, on 30 December. His Test debut followed against Australia in Chennai in February 2013.
His early international identity was clear: swing up front, disciplined lengths and a willingness to bowl at the end. In 2013, he took 4 for 8 against Sri Lanka in a Caribbean tri-series and finished that competition as its leading wicket-taker with 10 wickets in four matches.
He took 6 for 82 at Lord’s during India’s 2014 England tour and ended that series with 19 wickets. Later, his slower balls and yorkers made him a trusted limited-overs death bowler. In February 2018, he became the second Indian bowler to take a T20I five-wicket haul. In the 2022 Asia Cup, he produced a career-best T20I return of 5 for 4 against Afghanistan.
His last India appearance before the recall was a T20I in November 2022. The October 2026 selection opened a new chapter in his international career.
The franchise journey
From early IPL years to RCB
Bhuvneshwar was contracted by Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2009, though he did not play a tournament match for the franchise in his first two seasons. He later spent three seasons with Pune Warriors before joining Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014.
Sunrisers became the main IPL chapter of his prime. He won the Purple Cap in 2016 and 2017, and helped Hyderabad win the 2016 title. His powerplay movement and death-overs changes gave the side a reliable two-phase bowler.
He moved to Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the 2025 season. He took 28 wickets at an economy rate of 7.95 in IPL 2026 as RCB retained the title. The franchise context is covered in the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team profile.
