Delhi Capitals: franchise history
Delhi Capitals are Delhi’s IPL franchise, entering the competition in its inaugural 2008 season under the name Delhi Daredevils. The franchise was awarded to GMR in January 2008; ahead of the 2018 season, GMR brought JSW Sports into an equal ownership partnership. In December 2018 the team announced a rebrand to Delhi Capitals, with the new identity taking effect for the 2019 campaign. The change did not immediately produce a championship, but it marked the beginning of the franchise’s most sustained period of progress.
The early Daredevils reached the semi-finals in both 2008 and 2009. Results then became uneven: the side finished third after topping the league stage in 2012, but did not return to the playoffs until 2019. That 2019 campaign ended in third place; Delhi won its first knockout match, an eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad, before Chennai Super Kings ended the run in the qualifier.
Delhi’s landmark IPL season came in 2020. The Capitals reached their first men’s IPL final, defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the second qualifier to set up a title match with Mumbai Indians. Mumbai won the final, leaving Delhi as runners-up. The team again topped the league stage in 2021 and made the playoffs, but losses in both postseason matches prevented another final appearance. Delhi’s later league finishes have been mixed rather than consistently dominant: ESPNcricinfo records fifth place in 2025 and sixth in 2026.
Accordingly, the franchise’s IPL honours remain a single runners-up finish, in 2020, and no IPL championship title as of 3 October 2026. Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi is listed as the team’s home ground by the IPL and ESPNcricinfo; this is used here as the stable venue reference. This profile concerns the men’s IPL side and does not treat the separate WPL record as an IPL title or final.
