Early cricket and domestic pathway
Hope’s education included Queens College and St Bede’s School. He entered senior cricket through the Barbados and West Indies regional system, making his first-class debut in the 2012–13 season. A productive 2014–15 campaign helped move him towards international selection.
His early progress was built on batting rather than bowling. He also kept wicket, giving selectors a player who could contribute behind the stumps and occupy an important place in the batting order. In March 2017, Hope recorded his first-class double-century at Kensington Oval, his home ground.
Hope has also remained active in franchise cricket. He was listed in the Guyana Amazon Warriors squad for the 2026 Caribbean Premier League season. That listing is a season-specific status and should not be read as a permanent contract beyond the competition named.
West Indies international career
Hope made his Test debut for West Indies in 2015. His ODI debut followed in 2016, and he scored his first ODI hundred in only his second match in the format. His most famous early Test performance came at Headingley in 2017, when he made centuries in both innings against England and helped West Indies chase 322.
The 2018 Cricket West Indies awards reflected that rise: Hope was named Men’s Cricketer of the Year, Test Cricketer of the Year and ODI Cricketer of the Year. He was also named ODI Player of the Year again in 2019.
In 2019, Hope and John Campbell made a world-record 365-run opening partnership in an ODI against Ireland. The innings also took Hope past 3,000 ODI runs faster than any West Indies batter at that point.
Hope became West Indies’ ODI captain in 2023. By June 2026, Cricket West Indies recorded his 150th ODI appearance. The same official feature noted that he had reached 6,000 ODI runs in 142 innings, the second-fastest West Indies player to that mark behind Viv Richards.
As of the 2026 reference date, Hope remained an active West Indies international. A September 2026 report described him as the West Indies captain during the India ODI series and highlighted his record in India, including 512 runs in 11 ODIs there before that series.
Shai Hope’s IPL journey with Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals signed Hope for ₹75 lakh at the auction ahead of IPL 2024. That season marked his IPL debut. He played nine matches and scored 183 runs, with a highest score of 41 and a strike rate of 150.
The 2024 Delhi spell is his verified IPL history in this guide. His Guyana Amazon Warriors squad listing belongs to CPL 2026, a different competition. Neither that listing nor later international performances establish a new IPL contract.

What makes Shai Hope’s playing style effective?
Hope’s main strength is controlled accumulation. He is a right-handed wicketkeeper-batter who can settle an innings, preserve his wicket and increase the scoring rate once he has read the conditions. His record in ODI cricket is built around that balance rather than constant attacking strokes.
His own explanation of the role is practical: he focuses on the details of preparation, studies the opposition and changes his method for conditions in India, Australia, England or the Caribbean. That adaptability matters because Hope often bats through the middle stages of an ODI innings, when a team must protect wickets while keeping a chase on course.
Behind the stumps, wicketkeeping gives him another way to influence a match. The combination of keeping, leadership and top-order or middle-order batting has made him particularly valuable to West Indies in limited-overs cricket. He does not need to be described as an all-rounder: his established value is as a batter and wicketkeeper.
