Where it began
Early life and domestic breakthrough
Rohit Sharma was born on 30 April 1987 in Bansod, Nagpur, Maharashtra, and grew up in Mumbai. His early cricket development changed when coach Dinesh Lad noticed his ability at a camp in 1999. Lad helped him access better training and a school cricket environment.
He first stood out as a spinner before his batting became the main part of his game. That detail still explains something about his all-round feel for a match: he understands how a batter can be put under pressure, even though his senior career has been built around run-making.
Sharma made his List A debut for West Zone in the 2005–06 Deodhar Trophy and played his first-class match for India A later in 2006. He made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai in the 2006–07 season, scoring a double hundred against Gujarat and contributing in the final. Mumbai became the base of his domestic career.
The first global stage
From the 2007 World T20 to a new role
Sharma’s international start came in 2007. He made his ODI debut against Ireland in Belfast and his T20I debut against England at the inaugural men’s T20 World Cup. He was part of India’s title-winning campaign in South Africa, scoring an important 30 in the final against Pakistan.
The next few years were uneven. He missed India’s 2011 ODI World Cup squad after a loss of form and fitness, then rebuilt his place by becoming a regular opener. The move to the top of the ODI order in the early 2010s changed the shape of his career. He had more time to read the innings, and his large scores became a regular possibility.
India career
Rohit Sharma’s international journey
Sharma made his Test debut against West Indies in Kolkata in November 2013 and scored 177. His ODI record grew even faster. He hit 209 against Australia in 2013, 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014 and 208 against Sri Lanka in 2017. The 264 remains the highest individual score in men’s ODI cricket, while his three ODI double-centuries remain a unique record.
At the 2019 ODI World Cup, he scored five centuries, the most by a batter in one edition. He later became India’s all-format captain in 2022. India reached the 2023 World Test Championship and ODI World Cup finals under his leadership, then won the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy.
He retired from T20I cricket on 29 June 2024 after the T20 World Cup final. He announced his Test retirement on 7 May 2025. ODI cricket remained his international format at this cutoff.
The franchise chapter
Deccan Chargers to Mumbai Indians
Sharma entered the IPL with Deccan Chargers in 2008 and was part of their 2009 title-winning side. His part-time off-spin also produced a hat-trick against Mumbai Indians in that season.
Mumbai Indians signed him in 2011. He became captain in 2013 and led the franchise to five IPL titles, in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. He also led Mumbai to the 2013 Champions League T20 title. His IPL story includes six titles in total: one with Deccan Chargers and five with Mumbai Indians.
Sharma’s IPL batting milestones include his first century in 2012 and an unbeaten 105 against Chennai Super Kings in 2024. Mumbai’s team profile provides the franchise context.
