Sanju Samson’s 82-To-3 Swing, Suryakumar Yadav’s 17: What Next For Two India Stars?

Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav editorial portraits with Two Stars Two Form Tests headline

Sanju Samson went from a blazing 82 in Ranchi to just 3 in Indore. Suryakumar Yadav, meanwhile, scored 17 for MIG Cricket Club in Mumbai. Two familiar India stars are back in the form discussion, but their latest innings tell very different stories.

Sanju Samson is playing in India’s T20I series against West Indies. Suryakumar’s latest verified outing came in the MCA President Cup, a club T20 competition. He is not in the announced India squad for this West Indies series. These are not two players fighting through the same match or the same level of cricket.

For Samson, the next possible opportunity is the fourth T20I in Hyderabad on October 14. For Suryakumar, the immediate story is club cricket after his omission from Mumbai’s opening Ranji Trophy squad. Here is what the latest results actually show.

  • Why This Is Not A Hyderabad Selection Shootout

Sanju Samson: One Big Knock Between Two Short Stays

Samson’s first three innings against West Indies read 11, 82 and 3. The middle score shows his ability to build a fast innings. The two scores around it show why consistency remains the main question.

In Ranchi, Samson struck nine fours and four sixes. His 82 came at a strike rate of 200.00 and helped India reach 249/5. Yet West Indies chased that total and won by six wickets. His best innings of this series did not bring an India win.

Indore produced the opposite outcome. Sanju Samson fell for 3, caught by Kamil Pooran off Shamar Joseph, but India won by 14 runs. A team result and an individual batting result can tell different stories.

His dismissal in Lucknow came against Akeal Hosein. In Ranchi, Shamar Springer dismissed him. Three different bowlers took those wickets. That small sample does not support a sweeping claim that one bowling type has solved his batting.

Why Sanju Samson’s Ranchi 82 Still Matters

The Ranchi innings is a strong recent sign of Samson’s scoring range. He did not merely make a quick start. He faced 41 balls and kept finding boundaries well into the innings.

But that one score cannot erase two early exits. Equally, his 3 in Indore should not erase the 82. The fair reading sits between those extremes: he has produced a major innings, but has not repeated it across the opening three games.

If selected in Hyderabad, the useful question is whether he can turn another start into a substantial contribution. An early boundary or a short quiet spell will not answer that alone. The full innings matters.

For a separate look at his ground record, read the Sanju Samson Hyderabad T20I And IPL Stats. Those venue records are not the same dataset as his scores in this West Indies series.

Suryakumar Yadav: A Quick 17, Not A Big Return

Suryakumar’s latest verified match took place on October 11 at MIG Cricket Club in Mumbai. He captained MIG against Muslim United Sports Club in the MCA President Cup A and B Division competition.

The official Mumbai Cricket Association scorecard records 17 from 10 balls, including three fours. He was stumped by Moin Ahmed off Karan Bhanushali. MIG chased 154 and finished on 156/5 in 15.4 overs, winning by five wickets.

His strike rate was 170.00, so this was not a slow innings. The issue was its length. Ten balls gave him a brief scoring burst, not the substantial individual score that would make this outing a strong batting statement.

The team win is still part of the story. However, leading a successful chase and making a large personal contribution are separate things. A 17 should be reported as a 17, not dressed up as a major return to form.

The Ranji Omission Has A Different Context

Suryakumar was left out of Mumbai’s squad for the opening round of the 2026–27 Ranji Trophy. ESPNcricinfo reported chief selector Rajesh Pawar’s explanation: the committee wanted him to play red-ball games before considering him.

The report puts his last first-class appearance in February 2025. That explains the selection context more precisely than claiming the decision was caused by his latest club score. The omission was reported before the October 11 President Cup match.

The President Cup is T20 cricket. The Ranji Trophy is first-class cricket. A brisk club T20 innings cannot, by itself, answer a selector’s concern about recent red-ball game time. Nor does one short club innings prove that his national career is finished.

Why This Is Not A Hyderabad Selection Shootout

Cricket stadium and club-ground illustration explaining why recent form needs context

India’s BCCI-announced West Indies T20I squad includes Sanju Samson, with Shreyas Iyer as captain. It does not include Suryakumar. No confirmed addition of Suryakumar to that squad is established in the sources used for this update.

The fourth T20I is scheduled for October 14 in Hyderabad at 7:00 PM IST. Samson’s participation still depends on the match XI. This article does not place Suryakumar in that game or claim a direct selection contest between the two.

The next meaningful update for Samson is another completed innings if he plays. For Suryakumar, it is further competitive batting and any formally announced selection change. Until then, the headline is simple: Samson has a big recent knock to build on, while Suryakumar’s latest club innings was too brief to settle his form discussion.

Sources Checked: ESPNcricinfo, Cricbuzz, Mumbai Cricket Association, Mid-Day and BCCI. Match scorecards support the batting figures; squad and selection reports support the separate team contexts.
